How far you can see from the Eiffel Tower,
Blackpool Tower, the CN Tower? Or, how about your office or hotel window?
What about from the top of Mount Everest or just simply walking on the
beach - how far away is that ship on the horizon?
It's very easy to calculate:
Dkm=square root(Hm x 13)
Where Dkm is the distance in kilometres you are trying to find and Hm is the
height in metres of your eye above sea level. So, a person of about 1.8m
in height can see about 5km or 3 miles if standing on a beach. The spacing
between floors in buildings is around about 4m which makes an easy
way to estimate height.
Of course, hills, trees and other buildings might prevent you from seeing
all the way to the horizon.
